A Day’s Wait

Ernest Hemingway’s short story “A Day’s Wait” is about a nine – year – old boy who wakes up one morning with a fever. The boy’s father calles a doctor who takes the boy’s temperature. His temperature is 102 degrees, the doctor diagnoses influenza. The boy has been to school in France, that’s why he doesn’t know the difference between Fahrenheit and Centigrade. The boy believes  that with a temperature of 102 degrees he will cerntainly die. He returns back to his school in France, where the boy’s had told him that the normal temperature was 37 degrees and that nobody could live with a temperature of 44 degrees. The boy does not talk with his father about his fear of dying. Instead he waits all day and manages to stay calm and keep himself under control. Moreover the boy refuses to sleep, while he is taking his medicine. The father finds his behaviour a little bit strange but he doesn’t realize what is troubling his son. The father also leaves him alone in the house and goes hunting  for a while. Afterwards the father finally finds out about th boy’s suffering and explains the misunderstanding. The story is mainly based on the conversation beween father and son, which contains little action. The misunderstanding between them is simple and trivial but it contains tragic elements. The boy is fond of his father and faces his imminent death with heroic indifference. At any rate, the father is obviously a loving father but he is unable to understand the suffering of his son.

The big question : Can America ever be weaned off its love affair with guns ?

The article ” Can America ever be weaned off its love affair with guns ?”, written by Andrew Gumbel in October 4, 2006 is about the use of guns in america and how much people are die in America because of this violent.

To begin with, he writes that more and more people, including teenager are use guns. Not a year passes and a young child becomes to a gunman and kills his friends and teachers in his school and then himself. Cultural conservatives are making Hollywood for its violent movies and video games responsible. In the US, there are 17.000 murders a year, 15.000 of them are gun murders. At any rate children are most affected. Likewise its very easy for an American adult to buy a gun ,as long as he has a clean criminal record. Also a lot of people buy their guns at gun shows. The gunmen from the bloodbath in 1999 in Colorado at Columbine High School, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold also had a gun from a Colorado gun show. Finally the author of the article writes that the US government law up the gun control law, which is against gun violence.

He talks about the Independence Day and that the Nation’s founders are responsible that America exists as a free and independent state. They fighted to overcome tyranny and live in freedom. Bush also commends the brave men and women, who risk their lives to defend the state. He also says that, when the Americans celebrate the 4th of July, they also remember that the Declaration of Independence contains the promises of liberty. Every American believes in freedom, in every nation of the world.

John Adams already knew it in 1776 that the Independence Day would be celebrated in the future. He also wrote that it would be celebrated with pomp and parade, from one continent to the other.

Pilgrim fathers

The pilgrim fathers were the first English settlers in the New England, they cast about their freedom and independence in Amerika. They sailed with the “Mayflower” to America. They were suppressed in England, because of their faith and 1620 they emigrated to North America. Their goal was to arrive Virginia and get it as a colony. They came off the course and landed in Massachusetts. Than they founded the colony Plymouth in  Massachusetts. The founders created then the mayflower contract in which they committed themselves to a legal arrangement in the settlement. The pilgrim fathers wanted to achieve the realization of  a happier, better and more prosperous life with equal opportunities.

The American Dream

The American Dream characterizes the myth of the American society, which means that every American with nothing in his bags, without only one dollar, can work his way up to prosperity. That’s what  the saying stands for ” from rags to riches “. The expression was made during the first half of the 20th century, because of the economic upswing in the U.S. The basic thought of the american dream is also a part of the Declaration of Independence. There it is declared that the population is allowed to set off unfair rulers and give themselves a political order. While the people in the Europe of the 18th century were still suppressed of rulers, the American government created the onstitution law, which means that every American has the right to resist the government. The goal was the pursuit of happiness. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom, which attracted millions of people into the west, since the beginning of the 19th century. People saw their only chance for a better life in the emigration to the U.S., because already in the Mayflower Compact, which were rules set up by the Pilgrim Fathers, they said that every human has the same social status, no matter from which situations they come.
